Lortab
Addiction, Detox and Treatment
Reviews show that Lortab addiction has escalated over
the last decade. With a large-scale diversion of hydrocodone,
an estimated 7 million Lortab dosage units were diverted
in 1994 and over 11 million in 1997.
This vulnerable substance has hit every age group. Sometimes
referred as a "white-collar" addiction, hydrocodone
abuse has increased among all ethnic and economic groups.
The demographic statistics suggest that the most likely
hydrocodone abusers are among 20-40 yr old, white &
females, who take to commit suicide. Nonetheless, in the
past, hydrocodone-related deaths have been reported from
every age group.
Lortab, a combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and hydrocodone
is usually available in tablets, capsules, and liquid form.
Prescribed for moderate to sever pain, Lortab is a very
strong medicine having terrible side effects. It reduces
physical pain and anxiety or suffering. However, the side
effects overshadow benefits and cause much more pain in
the end.
Orally taking Hydrocodone can be habit forming as it may
give the greatest strength and most speedy inception of
ecstasy. Hydrocodone rapidly enters the brain and binds
to the pain receptors thereby reducing the sensation of
pain while Acetaminophen halts the production of prostaglandins,
which otherwise cause pain. Following this short jubilation,
it makes one feel heavy and drowsy for several hours.
Underlying the pre-existing factors and individual tolerance,
dependence or addiction can occur within one to four weeks
at higher doses of Lortab. Lortab abusers become physically
dependant and develop an urge for higher dosage with regular
intake of hydrocodone, which may result to be fatal. Thus,
care must be taken to follow the doctor's instructions when
taking Lortab. People are advised not to take a larger dose,
or take it more frequently, or take it for longer than the
doctor has prescribed.
Treatment
The hydrocodone dependency has been increasing with Lortab
addiction lurking behind Heroin, Marijuana and other abusive
substances. However, Lortab abusers can live a normal live
once again if they wish to. There are varieties of treatment
methods available to overcome lortab dependence.
Methadone
Programs
Methadone treatment can help patients recover from hydrocodone
addiction. It relieves the urge of craving, which is the
chief reason for relapse.
This treatment is carried out orally to restrain narcotic
withdrawal for 24 to 36 hours.
Dosages must be carefully monitored for those patients who
are receiving antiviral therapy for HIV infection, to avoid
potential medication interactions.
To get best results, methadone treatment can be coupled
with behavioral therapies, and other encouraging services
to stop abusers from using Lortab and return to more steady
and productive lives.
