Addiction
to Codeine and Effective Treatment
This naturally occurring narcotic has a soothing sensation
and sedating feel that is quite noticeable over the veiled
side effects and for that reason, people often indulge to
experience this short-lived euphoria.
Though according to the law only 8mg per unit dose of drug
is allowed Over the Counter to curb the widespread abuse
of Codeine, For example 325mg of acetaminophen (a unit dose
of acetaminophen) and 8mg codeine per tablet, is available
in the US OTC and release forms may have to be signed, in
order to keep track of how much Codeine you are buying,
while exceptions are seen in some states where Codeine can
be purchased easily over-the-counter (OTC). Also in Canada,
you will have no difficulty buying codeine with no forms
to sign, or questions to be answered.
Highly abusive drug on its own, codeine is often prescribed
with products containing other drugs such as acetaminophen.
Rx (prescription) products include the Tylenol w/ codeine
series (#1,2,3,4) containing respectively 8mg, 15mg, 30mg,
and 60mg of codeine. Each tablet also contains caffeine
in doses of 15mg, 30mg, 30mg and 0mg respectively. Thus
Tylenol #4 w/ codeine (the most desired one) contains 325mg
of acetaminophen, 60mg of codeine and no caffeine. Another
Rx product is the 222, 292, 293, 294 series. They are identical
to the Tylenol w/ codeine series, except aspirin replaces
the acetaminophen.
Medically prescribed as a pain reliever, Codeine is also
used for the relief of a non-productive cough, and as an
anti-diarrhea agent. 120mg of codeine injected under the
skin, provides pain relief equal to 10mg of morphine administered
by the same route. Doses used to relieve cough or diarrhea
range from 5mg to 30mg.
Codeine can be administered by many routes, including, SC,
IM (intramuscularly), as an enema, and orally. Conversely,
codeine cannot be administered safely by IV (intravenously)
injection as it may result in pulmonary edema (fluid in
lungs), facial swelling and other life threatening complications.
Overindulgence can result in Addiction to Codeine leading
to tolerance and users may experience radical withdrawal
symptoms along with the most common side effects including
drowsiness, light-headedness, dry mouth, urinary retention
(difficulty in urination), constipation and of course, euphoria.
Adverse effects can include itchiness (common), confusion,
nausea and vomiting. However the nausea experienced with
codeine is less common and less intense than that experienced
with the stronger opiates such as morphine.
Codeine Addiction
Treatment
With narcotic abuse reaching unreasonable height all over
the world, there has been an immediate requirement to curb
the widespread abuse of such hazardous substances and drugs.
Pharmacological Approaches
Presently, there are no medications available to treat MS
Contin addiction completely. However, voluntary organizations
have been assertively hunting for a solution to treat Contin
addiction. In addition to the problems of Contin overdose
medical treatments are being developed to deal with the
sensitive emergencies resulting from excessive Contin abuse.
Behavioral Treatments
Behavioral therapies have been found to be effective for
Codeine addiction and other drug problems, including both
residential and outpatient approaches. However, integration
of both types of treatments is suggested, as it is very
important to match the best treatment procedure to meet
the needs of the patient.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is another approach. It plays
an important role in the development and continuation of
Codeine abuse and dependence. It endeavors to help patients
to recognize, avoid, and cope with situations in which they
are most likely to use Codeine.
